The Sons Of Norway Foundation In Canada: Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants
The Foundation provides scholarships for post secondary and graduate studies, financial assistance grants for Oslo International Summer School students and grants for cultural and recreational activities sponsored by Canadian Lodges. We also offer financial assistance to Lodges starting a Junior Lodge or an orienteering program.
Post-Secondary Scholarships. We have provided twelve scholarships of $600 each for the last number of years. The scholarship program for post-secondary education continues to be the single largest expenditure on our budget. We receive 30 to 40 scholarship applications every year, mostly from western Canada.
We also provide grants for Sons of Norway District 4 (Zone 4) and District 7 Heritage and Culture camps, for Winter Sports events in both Districts and Ski for Light Canada.
Cultural Grant applications from Lodges and individuals are dealt with on an individual basis.
The Tormod Rekdal Grant provides financial assistance to persons taking courses in cultural activities who will pass their skills on to others.
The Joy Knutsvik Cultural Memorial Bursary provides financial assistance for successful applicants for Folkehøgskole in Norway. We usually receive two or three applications per year from students who will be attending Folkehøgskole or Oslo International Summer School in Norway, they can receive a maximum of $750.00 each depending on the number of applicants.
The Lysne Rosemaling Bursary is specifically aimed at those wanting to learn or upgrade their Rosemaling skills. Preference being given to those who are willing to teach others what they have learned.
The Humanitarian Financial Support Program provides financial assistance to people suffering losses to their homes, inventory and property by catastrophic events.
Post Secondary scholarship and all other application forms may be down loaded on this site under Forms. Forms may also be obtained by emailing the Foundation Secretary at helen.evjen@telus.net or from any Board member of the Sons of Norway Foundation in Canada or your local Lodge Foundation Director. A bequest to the
SONS
OF NORWAY
FOUNDATION
IN CANADA
IS
a meaningful way to make a difference;
- To ensure the continuance of scholarships for the post secondary
students of the future.
- To ensure that upcoming generations in the Norwegian community will
have access to support for the study and promotion of our culture and
heritage.
- And at the same time your bequest reduces the taxes that you will pay
after death, allowing you to also leave inheritances to those that you
love.
Simple
A charitable bequest can be made at any time for any amount. All you
need to do is instruct your lawyer to adjust your will to include a
bequest to the SONS
OF NORWAY
FOUNDATION
IN CANADA.
Tax Planning
Your estate will receive a tax receipt for the full amount of your
bequest. This will reduce the taxes payable on your final tax return.
When writing or updating your will ask your lawyer what is most
advantageous to your estate, this may vary from province to province.
Flexible
You can make your bequest for a specific amount, for a percentage of
your estate or for the residue of your estate. And you will always have
the peace of mind knowing that you can make changes to your will at any
time.
Satisfaction
Making a bequest is a personal decision and will ensure that the
SONS
OF NORWAY
FOUNDATION
IN CANADA
can continue to support our various programs for succeeding generations.
